Most buyers focus on upfront cost and product availability. While important, there are other crucial questions you must ask to determine if an LED display partner is the right fit for your project.

Understand Your LED Display Project Goals First

Before speaking with an LED video wall integrator to determine if they are the right partner for your project, you should have a general understanding of your space and project requirements. This will put you in a stronger position to assess responses and help identify where an integrator falls short.

Come prepared with clear answers to the following questions, or at least a working understanding of each:

What is the environment where your display will live (indoor or outdoor, climate-controlled or exposed, high-ambient-light or low-light)? Knowing these details matters because they affect every aspect of how your LED display should be specified and built.

How close will your viewers typically be to the display, and for how long? Proximity directly affects pixel pitch requirements and determines whether a direct view LED video wall or a standard LED panel solution is appropriate.

What type of content will run on your display, and how often will it change? This is important because static brand messaging has very different requirements than live video feeds or real-time data.

Do you need a temporary rental display or a permanent LED video wall installation? Sometimes the answer is clear. If you are a casino and want to install a large-format gaming-floor video wall, you will need a permanent screen. But other times, the answer may not be so black-and-white.

1: How Much Experience Do You Have With LED Display Installations in Environments Like Mine?

Your project environment influences every decision, from component selection to long-term maintenance planning. The answer to this question will quickly reveal if an LED display integrator is qualified to take on your project.

“General experience is not enough when evaluating an LED video wall integrator. They should have proven experience with installations similar to yours in environment, scale, and operational requirements,” explains Doug Green, CEO and Co-Founder of Trust Fall Technology Group. “Expertise in corporate boardrooms does not guarantee the ability to deliver a display for a high-traffic hospitality space, a casino floor, or a large entertainment venue.”

If a company claims relevant experience, request more than a portfolio of photos or videos. Ask them to name specific projects in environments comparable to yours and provide reference contacts who are willing to speak about what it was like to execute the project. 

They should also be able to speak fluently about the operational constraints specific to your environment, such as ambient lighting conditions, content rotation requirements, structural limitations, and uptime demands, without requiring you to explain why they matter. Their answer should address warranty terms, service agreements, and ongoing support after installation.

A qualified LED integrator should be able to explain their technology stack, including the chip grade and brand used, binning process, driver ICs, and video processing components. 

“These elements directly impact image quality, refresh rate, grayscale accuracy, and long-term reliability,” says Green. “Vague responses are a warning sign that the integrator either doesn’t know what’s going into your system or doesn’t want you to.”

For a commercial LED display, the component conversation should also address how specifications will be matched to the deployment environment. Indoor, outdoor, and high-ambient-light settings each have distinct requirements.

“An LED integrator should understand how pixel pitch relates to the environment,” says Green. “A qualified recommendation takes into consideration your viewing distance, content type, ambient lighting, and architectural context. If they suggest a pixel pitch without this information, they are quoting inventory, not customizing for your project.”

Pixel pitch recommendation is also an important question because over-specification can lead to unnecessary costs, while under-specification at close range produces a display that looks pixelated and unfinished in a space that demands the opposite. An LED integrator should be able to explain their recommendation in terms specific to your space.

To put this in context, for indoor installations where viewers stand 6 to 15 feet from the screen, a fine pixel pitch is typically required to achieve a seamless, continuous image. For large outdoor venues with viewing distances of 50 feet or more, a wider pixel pitch is not only acceptable but also appropriate.

A qualified LED integrator should be able to detail their quality control process, including how panels are tested before shipment, which calibration standards are applied at the system level, and what documentation accompanies delivery.

One benchmark of a serious quality control process is 72-hour burn-in testing, where panels are run continuously under load for 72 hours before delivery to identify early component failures before they reach the installation site. “If an integrator cannot speak to their burn-in testing protocol, or describes it in vague terms, that may mean that their quality control process is either informal or inconsistent,” says Green.

A comprehensive quality control process should also address panel-level versus system-level testing, calibration for color uniformity across the full display surface, and environmental protection standards relevant to your installation. For outdoor LED display installations or environments with high moisture exposure, IP65 ratings and GOB technology protection are essential. “If these specifications aren’t addressed in the documentation package upfront, ask why,” adds Green. 

5: What Certifications and Compliance Standards Will My Installation Require, and Do Your Systems Meet Them?

Certifications determine whether a display can be legally installed, if it is structurally safe under load, and if it will interfere with other building systems. Compliance standards vary by installation environment. A qualified LED integrator should be able to confirm which certifications apply to your project and provide documentation before installation begins. 

The relevant standards include FCC certification for electromagnetic compatibility, UL certification for electrical safety, CE marking for applicable markets, and RoHS compliance for restricted hazardous substances.

The important distinction to clarify is whether those certifications apply at the component or system level. A display assembled from individually certified components is not automatically certified as a complete system.

Your LED integrator should explain how panels are accessed for maintenance, whether the system uses front-access or rear-access serviceability, what modular tile replacement looks like in practice, and whether the system can be scaled or expanded after installation.

Thermal management should also be part of this conversation, specifically whether the system uses passive or active cooling, how that affects long-term component reliability, and the MTBF (mean time between failure) expectations for the specified hardware.

Green suggests that if you want to pressure-test their answer, ask: “What warranty and post-install support can I expect after purchase?”

“For a large commercial LED display investment, industry-standard warranty coverage and a defined service level agreement are not optional.
