  • Aspect Ratio: The ratio of a screen’s width to height, such as 16:9. Custom walls may require content to be built to non-standard dimensions.
  • Color Gamut: The range of colors a display can reproduce. A wider gamut means more accurate, vivid color.
  • Color Temperature: How warm or cool a display’s white light appears, measured in Kelvin. Corporate spaces often use a neutral 6500 K color temperature.
  • Contrast Ratio: The ratio between the brightest white and darkest black a display produces. Higher contrast yields deeper blacks and more depth.
  • DCI-P3: A wide color gamut standard from digital cinema, often specified for virtual production and high-end broadcast.
  • Grayscale: The number of shades per primary color. Higher bit depth means smoother gradients and less color banding.
  • HDR (High Dynamic Range): Display technology, such as HDR10, that widens brightness and contrast so detail survives in both shadows and highlights.
  • Nit: The unit of screen brightness. Indoor displays run 250 to 1,000 nits; outdoor displays often need 3,000 to 10,000 nits to fight sunlight.

  • Refresh Rate: How many times per second a display redraws its image, in Hertz. High rates prevent flicker on camera.
  • Resolution: The total pixel count, expressed as width by height, such as 1920 x 1080.
  • Viewing Angle: The widest angle at which a display can be viewed from before brightness or color noticeably drops.

2. LED Packaging, Modules, and Components

The physical building blocks, from individual diodes to the full panels.

  • Binning: Sorting LED diodes by small variances in color, voltage, and brightness so the whole display stays uniform.
  • Cabinet (Panel): The modular enclosure housing modules, power supplies, and receiving cards, locked together into a video wall.
  • COB (Chip-on-Board): Chips mounted directly on the board under protective resin, improving durability and heat dissipation.
  • DIP (Dual In-Line Package): Older bulb-and-pin technology, now largely replaced by SMD and COB.
  • Driving IC (Integrated Circuit): The chips that convert the video signal into the precise currents controlling each diode.

  • Asynchronous Control: Playback stored on the display’s own memory, letting it run without a connected computer.
  • Chroma Subsampling: Video compression that favors brightness over color data. Fine text needs uncompressed 4:4:4 to avoid bleeding.
  • CMS (Content Management System): Software for scheduling and publishing media, often cloud-based across many sites.
  • EDID (Extended Display Identification Data): A handshake ensuring the source sends the exact resolution and refresh rate the wall needs.
  • Fiber Optic Transport: Glass fiber instead of copper for carrying high-bandwidth video over long distances without signal loss.

  • SDI (Serial Digital Interface): A broadcast-grade interface with locking BNC connectors for long, uncompressed, low-latency runs.
  • Synchronous Control: Live video shown directly from a connected computer, standard for live events and broadcast.

  • Ballast: Heavy anchoring material at the base of a ground-supported structure to resist tipping.
  • Bezel-free: Panels with no edge frame, so tiling them produces a continuous, seamless surface.
  • Dead Weight: The total static weight of panels, cabling, framework, and power units that a structure must support
  • Die-Cast Aluminum Cabinet: A precision-cast frame with tighter alignment and lighter weight than stamped steel.
  • Flatness (Z-Axis Adjustment): Eliminating front-to-back offset between panels so the surface stays one continuous plane.
  • Flying Bar (Bumper): A load-rated rigging beam that lets a full wall hang from a truss or ceiling.
  • Front Service vs. Rear Service: Whether panels are accessed from the face of the wall or from behind for maintenance.
  • Ground Support System: A floor-based framework supporting a wall from the ground when overhead rigging is unavailable.
